In Shostak’s words, we clearly see !Kung life, the dry grasslands, the healing dances, the threatening military presence. Twenty years ago Marjorie Shostak published the story of her relationship with Nisa, a rural tribeswoman in the Kalahari Desert of Botswana. The book, Nisa: The Life and Words of a !Kung Woman, became one of the classics of anthropological literature. (Harvard University Press has simultaneously brought out a new paperback edition of this book.) In Return to Nisa, Shostak tells of her travels back to Botswana to see what has become of Nisa and of the !Kung as they have moved from hunting and gathering toward a more sedentary way of life. The book would be poignant for this tale alone--the changes in the life of the tribe and its political travails, Shostak's surprise and hurt at her ambivalent reception, especially the flood of queries of "What have you brought me?" But it is made even more so because one reason Shostak returned was that she had breast cancer. She died before she finished the book (which her husband and two friends completed from manuscript drafts). It is, understandably, a much more personal story than Nisa, a search for healing and for a less complicated past and the record of a friendship that surmounted time, distance, and cultural boundaries.

All those years ago Shostak had studied the people and the land of the !Kung community and had written the acclaimed work, Nisa: The Life and Works of a !Kung Woman (1981). Nisa is the pseudonym she gives to one of the subjects with whom she had become close and whom she longs to meet again. Shostak's account of her earlier visits to Botswana recalls her endeavor to delve into the common anthropological questions regarding similarities and differences between cultures. You'll be completely drawn into Return to Nisa, whether or not you've read Marjorie's Shostak's original classic anthropological text Nisa. Author, Marjorie Shostak returns to the bush in Africa two decades after the publication of her first book. This time, Marjorie has been diagnosed with breast cancer and feels compelled to visit her African friend, Nisa. Marjorie's relationship with Nisa is complicated and compelling. Theirs is not a traditional Western friendship, but somehow they are able to transcend insurmountable obstacles and share intimate tales of their lives. We learn that this time around, Marjorie has breast cancer. Not only does she leave behind the comfort of a modern medical establishment but also her three children. It becomes obvious why this author felt a calling to return to the bush. This piece of non-fiction is fascinating. You won't be able to put it down.

As a survivor of breast cancer, it was amazing to read this book. Just as amazing is the story of how it was written--the ultimate act of courage by the author. It is a book about friendship, Africa, breast cancer, and womankind.
