Fun Introduction to Chinese Horoscopes

Most Chinese kids grow up knowing from a very early age what sign they are born under. If you lose your temper, it is attributed to the yang side of your nature; if you don't get along with your mum, it is because your signs conflict; if you succeed in school, it is because you are born under an intelligent sign, and so on. Under Theodora Lau's guidance, feel free to delegate all responsibility for your actions - she provides a very good summary of the "basic" attributes of each sign as it is understood by the (Chinese) person on the street, and also combines it with the western signs, for added interest and familiarity with Western audiences (and perhaps also explains why people born in the same year are not clones of each other!) She also touches on how the hour of your birth will result in more refined differences.
The main charm of this book is the sprightly manner in which she deals with the subject, amusing and readable in turns. One can almost believe it is a mirror she is holding up ... how very flattering ... one wonders if she has the wily pen of a Monkey, or the charm of a Snake ...

A MUST READ Handbook for those in Search of Themselves!

Theodora Lau is a highly knowledgeable Chinese astrologer who combines a masculine logic and feminine sensitivity to her work. Not only is she 100% accurate in her Yearly predictions for different Animal Signs but also exhibits a sense of humor and down to earth style of writing that amuses and makes you laugh. It's the only book that I'm proud of to pass around during get-togethers or parties because Lau combines the Eastern and Western Signs of Astrology which we all found sincere and true. A true psychic. I shall consider reading more books by her from now on and hope to read what is in store for the Signs in the Lunar Cycle for 2003 and beyond. She has kept her reverence for the Chinese tradition and yet at the same time has an innovative view of a western mind. I think this Handbook of Chinese Horoscopes is worth more than its price.

I purchased this book based on the comments and reviews of other readers. So, I made the mistake of thinking that this was a book on advanced Chinese astrology. This is elementary Chinese astrology. Which is equivalent to looking up your sun sign in your local newspaper. If you're serious about learning Chinese astrology, then try and find a book on Zi Ping Four Pillars of Destiny.

In the first three chapters, you will meet Vinny Denucci the son of the most powerful crime boss in New York City. Vinny had been isolated from his father’s work while growing up because his uncle was to be the successor. On his twenty-first birthday, Vinny’s father tells him that he must abandon his plans to become a lawyer and instead replace his uncle and become the new successor. "In the real world it is forbidden to have your son become a "made man". It is against the rules." Reluctantly, Vinny participates in his assigned birthday ritual, which requires him to kill a disloyal family member. As a "made man" and the family successor, Vinny must watch his father’s organization while his father takes care of a "business" problem in Florida. When his father is gone, Vinny slowly transforms from a man who must morally justify his actions into a man who, because he cannot trust his acquaintances or even his father, becomes more callous, paranoid, and impulsive. He comes to learn the true nature and consequences of being part of the Mafia and understands why his mother warned him to be strong and resist the lure of "easy" money and power.

"My only Son", is the story of Vinny Denucci, the son of Sonny Denucci, the head of a New York organized crime family and the " Boss of Bosses" of the five (5) Mafia families of New York. The story begins when Vinny is fourteen (14), a naive, intelligent, good-natured boy, who does not fully understand what his father does for a living. Vinny has dreams of becoming a lawyer when he reaches adulthood. Sonny is a ruthless crime lord, who wants his only son to be his successor as head of the crime family. Felicia, Vinny's mother, is a strong willed individual who has grown tired of living the life of a crime boss's wife, and wants her son, with whom she is extremely close, to follow his dreams to a life outside the family.
Sonny is so outraged and threatened by Felicia's interference with his plans for Vinny that he takes Felicia's life, and with the help of a crooked New York Detective, is able to cover up his horrible crime. With Felicia out of the way, Sonny drags Vinny into the life he and Felicia so vehemently wanted him to avoid. This story, through its many twists and turns, traces the life of Vinny as he is initiated into the family, becomes a " mobster", and eventually winds up in prison.
While Vinny is in prison his grandmother Gina, Felicia's mother, is approached by an FBI Agent Rick Carr, who tells her that Felicia's death was not natural, as had been reported, and that he suspects Sonny was involved with her death. Once Gina relates this information to Vinny upon his release from prison, he makes the life altering decision to work with the FBI to try to bring down his Father's empire, in order to avenge his beloved mother's death. The story culminates in a heart stopping confrontation between Vinny and Sonny that will have the readers on the edge of their seats.

About the Author
The Reverend Dr. Pauli Murray (1910–1985) was a lawyer and civil-rights activist, America's first black woman Episcopalian priest, and a founder of NOW.

Patricia Bell-Scott is professor of family and child development and women's studies at the University of Georgia. She was founding editor of SAGE: A Scholarly Journal on Women and has been a contributing editor to Ms. Magazine. She has published several books, including Life Notes: Personal Writings by Contemporary Black Women, Double Stitch: Black Women Write About Mothers and Daughters, and Flat-footed Truths: Telling Black Women's Lives (with Dr. Juanita Johnson-Bailey).

Truly extraordinary stuff by an excellent writer.
This woman wrote up background briefs for Thurgood Marshall when he was still with the NAACP, she organized the first restaurant sit-in's (in DC in early 1940's), she got the Army, during WWII, to make a first step toward placing segregated restaurants off limits for all personnel. She was a co-founder of NOW.
None of the above is in this book, it's the story of her family. If was not well received when published as miscegenation was a crime until the '70's in some places.
But it is an important book for today what with the interest in Jefferson's black descendants and the rediscovery that the Civil War was truly about slavery.
It would be a wonderful addition to University social justice curricula.

You should know more about Pauli Murray

Dr. Pauli Murray was a hero. One of my heroes, as it happens. This is the true story of her family's journey from enslavement to moral, intellectual and economic success. These are the people who, today, are becoming America. When Dr. Murray, a recent Yale Law School grad, applied to the Massachusetts bar she had to account for an arrest she had in another state in the 1940's. It seemed she was protesting civil right violations when Martin Luther King was in high school. Any laws she broke at the time - and she did - had since been rescinded or repealed. She was admitted to the bar, as well as to several university faculties, and eventually to the Episcopal priesthood. This is a significant historical figure about whom we all should know more.

this book cannot be recommended highly enough. it is readable non-fiction, written in an almost prose-like manner. I laughed, I cried and I shared my copy with loved ones. Should be read by anyone who wants to understand the struggles of race and sex both in the civil war times and today.

Wonderful Read

I enjoyed reading this biography of writings by Robert James Waller. I, too, felt he was very similar to Robert Fulghum in his approach to life; a reverence for all that is simple and beautiful in this world. After reading only his fictional works, I gained a deep appreciation of the author himself and am refreshed that someone with a PhD in business can have a soul.

Robert James Waller Is Inspiring!

Several years ago I attempted to read "The Bridges of Madison County" but the mood wasn't right. Eventually, I attempted to listen to it on audiocassette (against my better judgement, as I truly prefer to read the books) and had the opportunity to hear the author read it the way he wanted it to be heard. Finally!! I understood what everyone was talking about! I then acquired all of his other books and slowly but surely tried to get through them between all of my other readings. I truly loved "Puerto Vallarta Squeeze" but put off reading his other books for almost two years. Recently, I sat down and read "Slow Waltz in Cedar Bend" and "Border Music" within a two-day period. I immediately knew that I had to read "Old Songs in A New Cafe" while the mood was still with me.
From the moment that I opened the book I felt as though I was meeting a most incredible person. His essays were truly inspiring! I was impressed by his ability to express his emotions and his thoughts with such ease. While it is commonly surprising for a man to express such thoughts and emotions, there was only one person who came to mind while I read this book: MY FATHER. I thought of him so many times while I read about his romance with his wife and his feelings about his daughter growing up and creating a life for herself. Halfway through the essays, I spoke to my father and explained that the book (that he had purchased for me for Christmas 1995) would be returned to him immediately upon my completion because, of everyone that I know, he is the only one who could TRULY appreciate the enjoyment I received from this book. When he received the book and began reading the essays, he stated to me that Robert James Waller writes the way he thinks and would like to write. He also referred specifically to the essays about Waller's wife and daughter. I have read this book several times, love to take it on vacation. These stories are wonderful, heartfelt. A nice reminder of my own childhood growing up in Indiana. We have dusty roads, and favorite pets, and enjoy the quite life here too. It's beautifully written by a wonderful Author. Sure wish he would write more!

This book is a thorough introduction to the most important topics in data mining and machine learning. It begins with a detailed review of classical function estimation and proceeds with chapters on nonlinear regression, classification, and ensemble methods. The final chapters focus on clustering, dimension reduction, variable selection, and multiple comparisons. All these topics have undergone extraordinarily rapid development in recent years and this treatment offers a modern perspective emphasizing the most recent contributions. The presentation of foundational results is detailed and includes many accessible proofs not readily available outside original sources. While the orientation is conceptual and theoretical, the main points are regularly reinforced by computational comparisons.

Intended primarily as a graduate level textbook for statistics, computer science, and electrical engineering students, this book assumes only a strong foundation in undergraduate statistics and mathematics, and facility with using R packages. The text has a wide variety of problems, many of an exploratory nature. There are numerous computed examples, complete with code, so that further computations can be carried out readily. The book also serves as a handbook for researchers who want a conceptual overview of the central topics in data mining and machine learning.

Bertrand Clarke is a Professor of Statistics in the Department of Medicine, Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, and the Center for Computational Sciences at the University of Miami. He has been on the Editorial Board of the Journal of the American Statistical Association, the Journal of Statistical Planning and Inference, and Statistical Papers. He is co-winner, with Andrew Barron, of the 1990 Browder J. Thompson Prize from the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers.

Ernest Fokoue is an Assistant Professor of Statistics at Kettering University. He has also taught at Ohio State University and been a long term visitor at the Statistical and Mathematical Sciences Institute where he was a Post-doctoral Research Fellow in the Data Mining and Machine Learning Program. In 2000, he was the winner of the Young Researcher Award from the International Association for Statistical Computing.

Hao Helen Zhang is an Associate Professor of Statistics in the Department of Statistics at North Carolina State University. For 2003-2004, she was a Research Fellow at SAMSI and in 2007, she won a Faculty Early Career Development Award from the National Science Foundation. She is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of the American Statistical Association and Biometrics.

An overall good book, although a hard one.

This book covers many methods in data mining and machine learning. The best thing to me is that it tells each story from a theoretical way, but not a superficial way. It really helps you understand these machine learning methods from a deep perspective. Reading this book did let me think more thoroughly.
Of course the good thing can be a bad thing in that, if you do not have enough background in statistics and math, this book can be very difficult to read. The famous Hastie, Tibshirani and Friedman's book is a good one and someone may complain that that book is not easy to read unless you have solid background in math. However Clarke's book, to me, is even harder.
If you really want to learn the details in data mining, this book would be an ideal resource.
