Great book!

Manual for software that makes it possible to do numerical experiments with dynamical systems and study chaotic behavior.

As for year 2011, comments are as follows:

1. Software was written over 10 years ago, and general "look and feel" is a bit outdated. Menu structure a bit not intuitive

2. Book comes with diskette that contains program of Dynamics system. The version I got with book is for Windows 95. Don't even TRY to run this software on Windows XP or later. Download the newest version from author's web page

This version works perfectly on Windows XP and Windows 7 (I tested on both). This new version comes with new features and extended manual.

Highly recomended for everybody who wants to make "experimental mathematics". Warning: you must know something about dynamical systems and chaos to use this book. This is not a textbook

Besides having the capability to produce the most popular "chaos" pictures discovered, this should read program accompanied by book. The more sophisticated the readers knowledge of non-linear dynamics, the more powerful this program becomes. This does not mean the reader needs to know C++ to work it (thank the fractal gods). This set up is a must for beginners in non-linear systems. The learning curve is about 2 hrs. and is easier than most window based applications. While most of the computations and graphs can be done in Mathcad (Matlab etc.), some of the special application functions would be very time comsuming. The best feature for this reader was the "add your own functions for testing" which has a significant file of reader's previous work to be analysed. This app. resides (in the desk top) along with Feedback and Control apps. ODE solvers, and the readers wavelet analysis. (just to show how useful it is).

A great read and cannot wait to read the next installment

Although I have not read books 2-5 in this series, I was able to read the book and understand everything for the most part. I did have a little difficulty understanding the Shadows completely but I am sure once I go and read the middle books I will be up to speed. I still think the book could be read without reading the other books but it will leave you with a few questions.
The story line flowed well without those nasty grammar and misspellings that often slow down the flow and take some of your reading enjoyment. The sex scenes were steamy and didn’t seem as if they were added just to ‘sell’ the book. The New Orleans setting could be felt through the food and location descriptions. (However, I still cannot wrap my brain around tuna with crepes.) I was cheering on the good guys, biting my lip with worry over the victims and smiling by the end of the book and wondering if there may soon be the pitter patter of little feet entering their lives.
If you are a fan of the series then you will want to dive right on in and find out how things have been going for the newlyweds. If you have never read a book from the Bourbon Street series, you can start with this one but I would recommend starting with book one and working up to this one so you are not left wondering about the inner workings of the Circle, the Brotherhood, and the Heavenly angels. I would recommend this series and even the Crescent City Fae series as they are both well written and inventive works.

Incubus of Bourbon Street(Jade Calhoun Series)

This series just keeps you cheering them on in their adventures that take them to different places and through the veil. Jade does not lead a boring life, since she's come to NOLA she's been a magnet for the unsavory things that lurk. Love her and her coven and friends, they definitely keep us entertained. I will be getting started on Piper`s adventures also, can only imagine where she will take us. Great Job!!!

I just LOVE this series !

I just wish that I didn't have to wait for the next book to come out. Deanna is one of my favorite authors. I really recommend all of her stories, cuz I've read most of them and I loved all the characters. I lose so much time, cuz I just couldn't put the book down. So, if you want to read a really great story, just pick up one of Deanna Chase's books, sit down, turn the phone off and enjoy.

Where's the headless chicken I was promised?

For its time it was an OK book into what the future might be like ... got some things right but many things wrong. Thank goodness, no headless chickens grown in labs to satisfy the bloodlust of KFC or humans made into fish people complete with gills!... and luckily the environmental disasters predicted here have largely been avoided except for the occasional oil spill or tsunami wrecking nuke plants.

One of the greatest books I have ever reviewed. As a child, the illustrations on futuristic genetically engineered beings made it one of my favorites. As an adult, I can finally understand all the molecular biology concepts behind the work. It is simply excellent, a book that broadens the mind to new possibilities.

John Horswill is a member of IBM's CICS User Technololgy team at IBM in Hursley Park, U.K. He has been involved in delivering information on various platforms, including OS/390, AIX, Solaris, Digital Unix, HP, and Windows NT, for the past 11 years. Before joining IBM, he worked in Further Education in England for many years. He graduated from London University and completed an M.Sc. in Applied Cell Science and Virology at Brunel University before turning his attention to computing. If you can't find him in his office or working from home, he is probably in his garden or hopefully "at the top of a mountain on a clear day."

Tasty selections

This book has a wide variety of recipes including appetizers. I like the fact that all of the recipes are for actual cake pops made in the cake pop baker, not where you mix up a cake mix and add icing to it to make the balls. I have so many recipes marked to bake it will keep me baking something new for a long time. I also like the added notes, to either slightly change the recipe or suggestions on how to use the cake pops. Even has a section on cake pops for special occasions. I'd seen all the cake balls cook books but wanted something beyond that and not just with sweets.

I got this hoping to find some good from scratch recipes to use but most of them seem to have a cake batter base to them and just ok, I have a from scratch chocolate cake-pop recipe that is great but it didn't come from this book and was hoping to find more good ones. The glazes however are wonderful.

I guess I should have done a little research on "pops" because they're awfully sweet--- the ideas are cute, and will occasionally be sharing with grandkids but they're basically more trouble than they're worth although if you're "idea challenged" then the book will be a good source for you to peruse..

About the Author
J. Clark Scott has had a long and diverse career in the computer industry, starting at large companies such as IBM and Intel, and eventually becoming the author of four successful consumer software packages. Early in his career, he noticed how confused some of his friends were about computers and gave them lectures to teach them how simple the basics really were. It was at that time that the idea for this book was born. This is his first book, but one that has been in the works for decades.

The standard first textbook on computers for everyone

I have been a software developer and software architect for over 40 years, starting at a time when you worked "so close to the computer" that you naturally knew how they worked. Over the years, I have seen that knowledge more and more absent from each new generation of developers that came along that I have led and mentored. It seems that the fundamentals simply aren't taught any more.

My standard approach has been to give informal seminars to my developers to get them this vital information. But I have been looking far and wide for a book that describes exactly how a computer operates that could be understood by anyone. After all this time, I finally found it. (As Archimedes would have said, "Eureka!")

This book builds up gradually from first principles until without realizing it, the reader suddenly finds he or she knows all about how computers work.

Mr. Scott defines every technical word the first time he uses it so you are never left wondering what it all means. Nothing I have seen even comes close to this book. It must have taken a lot of painstaking effort to work out and refine how to present every detail in a way that would not lose anybody along the way, no matter what their level of knowledge at the beginning.

Once the first copy arrived and I went through it in detail, I realized that this was what I had been looking for to provide the fundamentals that junior developers needed but had never been taught. So I bought 20 more copies and made the book the first step in the required curriculum to train my whole company -- but not just the "computer guys", everyone who uses a computer for any purpose.

The beauty is that this is not just a book for people who want to be or become computer professionals, it is a great textbook for all ages -- schools, homeschooling, college and anyone who is just curious about how computers work.

The book is so well written. It is informal, easy to understand and definitely complete.

There is a lady in my company who works with computers but had know idea how they really work. With the book, there was no stopping her. I found a simple, free computer program on the web (called LogicSim) that allowed her to actually build circuits (by drag-and-drop) and then click switches and see the results. She can easily apply what she learns right there and is very excited about what she has learned and how simple it all is. She has a new-found confidence in her work that is observable. Many others have expressed how easy it is to read and understand.

If you want to drive a car effectively, it is a pretty good idea to know the basics of how a car works. In the same way, having the knowledge you get from this book helps you with everything you do with computers.

In my opinion, Mr. Scott's book should be the standard first textbook on computers for everyone from now on ... at least until such time as some brand new technology arrives that completely changes the way our computers are built and work, which probably won't be in the foreseeable future.

It really is for Everyone

I am currently a 2nd year Electrical Engineering student and I am enrolled in a Digital Logic course. I found this subject to be very interesting and decided to research further into how computers use simple gates to do such complex functions. That is when I came across this book. Even with the little previous knowledge I had, this book broke everything down - from the simplicity of a register, to the building blocks of the RAM and CPU. It was enlightening to easily read more in depth on an otherwise extremely complex subject and finish the book with the knowledge of how most computers work. I highly recommend this book to my fellow Electrical and Computer engineering colleagues.

But don't think that just because engineering students find use of this book, that it is too complicated for those out of the discipline. The author does a great job of breaking down every little necessary nuance of each building block and thoroughly describes how each block works together to make a computer work; all wrapped up in a short ~200 page book. It is written without complex, technical jargon which avoids confusion wherever possible, and is readable by most who have a strong desire to learn more about how computers work.

This was such an interesting and informative read. Again, I highly recommend this book to anyone with even the slightest curiosity about how a computer works.

Loved it. Anyone who really wants to understand how ...

I have always been interested in electronics and computers. My father was a old-time main frame COBOL and FORTRAN programmer and he was always very nebulous to me about how a computer actually worked. What I've always wanted to understand is how a computer uses basic physical principles (circuits) to generate logic - I understood Claude Shannon's original thesis on the idea of use simple relays for Boolean logic but I never made the jump to higher order processes. This book is the bridge! The author makes it very simplistic from the start and builds slowly to more complex ideas until - before you know it - you basically understand how the electronic circuits create the abstract ideas of registers/buses/memory address...etc.... Loved it. Anyone who really wants to understand how your program ultimately is broken down into the basics of circuits, this is the book for you.

Nice quality set of books!

This is a great set of Minecraft books! My 6 year old son has been begging for these for almost a year now, so I finally caved and bought these for a Christmas gift for him. I love that they are hardback books, as they can't bend and tear very easily. This is a solid and quality set of 4 books that come in a nice case, to keep them all together. This is a must have for any Minecraft fan! He's going to LOVE them - and I'm sure they'll all be out for information when he's playing it on our Xbox 360. The price is unbeatable - as I did a lot of research to find the best deal on them. Make sure you get the updated editions, so you can have the most 'to date' version of the books - although, in another 6 months, we'll probably need an updated version of the updated version. HA!

Makes game a million times better with all these tips!

A great book for my seven year old to learn many tricks and shortcuts with the game. He is a good reader and had trouble reading it sometimes but he managed. The pictures were very helpful. The book covers are very good quality and wont tear. His favorite was the construction handbook. He learned how to make a floating island and a mansion. He said the palace gardens was very cool too! His second favorite was the combat handbook. He learned how to make basic weapons and what the armor protected the player from. This book explained how to protect yourself from silverfish. It showed also what happens if you look at an an enderman in the eye which is bad bad mistake. Lots of info that can really make the game more enjoyable. All Experience Levels, All Ages!

So I notice most of the reviews are parents saying how much their child loves this collection.

WELL. I am not embarrassed to say that I'm a 24 year old mother who bought this for herself. I've been playing Minecraft for 4 years now. It's almost my #1 favorite game. (Classic Tomb Raider is top) I have put a lot of time into Minecraft. When I first started playing I didn't have access to the internet so I learned everything on my own. I still very rarely look for answers on the internet. It's overwhelming to me and just hard to find what I'm looking for.

I'm so happy I found these handbooks!! I have become very fluent in the game on my own, but with a game like this it's almost impossible to know everything. One thing I've always had trouble with is Redstone. The Redstone handbook has taught me a general idea of how it works, but I'm still confused with the concept of "endless possibilities". I'm working with it though, and that's something I just didn't do.

The colored photos and diagrams they show are so helpful. I've learned many new things from each Handbook.

-Like, never place a bed in the Nether or End.

-Notch is the creator of Minecraft.

-Creepers drop music discs if killed by a skeleton.

-You can walk a tamed wolf with a fishing rod. You can also use fishing rods to reel mobs to their death.

I haven't read them all cover to cover yet, so I'm sure there's much more to learn. Bottom line, these handbooks are created in a way that they can be understood by all ages. (If you're old enough to play the game, you're old enough to read the books) They are made very clearly with photos of all explanations.
They are great for beginners and experts. In fact, if you put so much time into Minecraft that you ARE expert, then you'll want to have these books just as a fan.

I've included photos so you can get an idea of what they look like and what's inside. If I could change anything about these books it would be a more thorough explanation of Redstone. Kinda like Redstone for Dummies. But they are perfect. They are beautiful. Everytime I hold them I am taken back to that calming place in gameplay.

Important to note: these handbooks are geared more towards the PC/Mac platforms rather than Xbox or Playstation. I personally play on Xbox One, and 99% of the material is still relevant to me. It's just different controls and setup but you can still have the same outcomes.
