About the Author
Maureen Furniss is a member of the Animation Faculty at CalArts in Los Angeles, where she teaches character animation and experimental animation. She is the founding editor of Animation Journal and author of Art in Motion: Animation Aesthetics (1998) and Chuck Jones: Conversations (2005). She is a founding member of the Society for Animation Studies and Women in Animation. She lives in Santa Clarita, California.

A hefty and well-written overview of the art form. Complements how-to character animation books (eg The Animator's Survival Kit) by covering a more eclectic range of materials and techniques-- how to make a wire armature, for example, or how to scratch animation directly into film stock. Makes one want to experiment. Full of illustrations, artist's profiles, and history, this is a serious resource for a diverse art.

Pricey...but probably worth it

My teenager is enjoying this doodle book and it helps in supporting her mindfulness as she draws and creates. If you or your recipient lacks a creative spark...this may not be for you. A couple sentence prompt is given and the rest is the space to create...a less creative person (like myself,)may not fare as well as our creative daughter. It does support mindfulness, letting you draw what fear, happiness, etc is.I guess its hard to put a price on a teenager exploring her thoughts and emotions through these mindfulness promoting activities.

This mindful doodle book is made for both practitioners and for the ordinary person like me. Doodling is another way of practicing mindfullness. There are 75 creative exercises in the book. Each doodle has a short description of what the doodle is all about.

At the beginning of the book, there are case examples of doodles. Although doodles are so personal, the examples help guide the lay person. Mindful doodles helped me deal with emotions i was trying to figure out. Once those doodles were on the paper, I felt so much better. It helped guide me to my next step.

Everyone needs ways to help us decease our stress. Traditionally people thought of exercise, meditation, yoga, creativity as ways to help have a better quality of life. Now, mindful doodles can be added to this list.

Let me share with you, that I have no artistic ability. That's was great about the doodles; it doesn't matter your ability. It's just about putting your thoughts and feelings on paper.

I can only imagine how much this would add to a therapy session with a qualified person.

I highly suggest you buy this book.

A kind and useful present to yourself or a friend

Anyone can enjoy this wonderful and inviting book: folks in "the biz" (teachers, therapists, counselors), artists, prisoners, writers, seniors, children, and, yes, executives -- the list goes on. Many of us non-artists can get intimidated by painting, or drawing with the right side of the brain. Whatever your tribe, this is a fun and healing book, for who among us doesn't doodle?? Dr. Isis's notion of doodling "mindfully" is the fruit of more than 30 years in the field of art and expressive therapies, and the 75 creative exercises in the book are divided into five categories: 1) Doodling Feelings (Emotional Landscapes): Happy doodle, sad doodle, loving others doodle, frustration doodle, excited and delighted doodle, etc.; 2) Doodling Mind: Deep thinking, dense, procrastination, stress relief, sentimental; 3) Doodling Hopes, Aspirations and Dreams: Present moment awareness, looking ahead one, five, or 10 years, gratitude, reality; 4) Doodling Experiences: dark and light, doctors office, sports, traveling, parenting, conflict resolution, divorce, death; 5) Doodling Your Universe: My view of now, dialogue with inner critic, dialogue with most supportive voice, musical, delicious, gut feeling ... well, maybe you get the idea. Her narrative is a clear, useful, and accessible guide for a mental health practitioner or The examples are most helpful. You might want to keep this book close at hand, and take a few minutes to release your inner kid and doodle it up. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Clive N. Menhinick is a computer scientist, geometer, and research photographer, based in Cheshire, England. In 2005, he recognized that 'state-of-the-art' developments in DSLR camera technology---particularly the vast increase in colour resolution ('bit depth')---opened up a new frontier for research in natural science. Over a ten-year period he has conducted his own pioneering project, developing digital-photographic techniques and custom software. In his analysis he found that many results appeared to depend on a simple angle-based geometry that he named 'Ori32'. It was the study of this geometry that provided a clear path to the discovery of the Fibonacci Resonance. Clive read physics and mathematics at Liverpool University.

About the Author
JAY A. LEVY MD, a keen AIDS and cancer researcher and an educator, is presently professor in the Department of Medicine and research associate in the Cancer Research Institute. He is head of the Laboratory for Tumor and AIDS Virus Research at UCSF (University of California in San Francisco). Dr. Levy co-discovered HIV in 1983 and also discovered a novel immune response that controls HIV infection through the production by CD8+ lymphocytes of an antiviral factor, CAF. He has published over 450 articles in virology and infectious diseases, particularly on HIV/AIDS. He is author or editor of 14 books on virology and immunology and is Editor-in-Chief of the highly cited journal, AIDS. Among Dr. Levy s publications are his acclaimed four volume series, The Retroviridae and his sole-authored book, HIV and the Pathogenesis of AIDS, now in its third edition (2007) and being translated into several languages. Dr. Levy is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the American Academy of Microbiology.

Sidney M. Levy (Baltimore, Maryland) is an independent construction industry consultant with more than 30 years in the industry. For those who are seeking a basic understanding of virological principles at a biological level, this text provides a readable good basic framework. Topics range from plant and animal viruses, to sub-viral particles to the cellular effects of a viral infection. All in all, an excellent introduction for a new student of virology.

Informative and Gently Worded Look into the History of Forensics

Concise history of the different sciences and how they evolved from 16th Century beginnings to our modern day understanding of the solving of criminal activity. I felt as if Ms McDermid was sitting in the armchair on the other side of my fireplace chatting me through some meetings with old friends. It's a neatly worded taster that more than scratches the surface of this multi faceted subject and piqued my interest once again to marvel at the time it takes for an author to do their researching let alone write their crime fiction tale. It's interesting to note how even this science has it's ups and downs depending on who the protagonists and champions are at any given moment in the police force and in the criminal courts. If you're an avid reader of crime fiction this is a wonderful resource to help understanding those things that are often mentioned in stories but are never elaborated on - thoroughly recommended....

In "Forensics" popular mystery writer Val McDermid outlines the development of modern forensics (scientific analysis of evidence) - a discipline that has literally made it much harder to 'get away with murder'. Rudimentary forensic investigations began long ago: a Chinese coroner's handbook from the 1200s records the story of a murderer caught when flies were attracted to traces of blood on his scythe. Nevertheless, it's likely that many criminals went undiscovered before modern investigative techniques were formulated.

Each section of the book covers a different topic related to criminal investigations such as: the crime scene, fire, insects, pathology, poisons, blood spatter, fingerprints, DNA, bullet markings, and so on. A brief review can't cover the wide array of subjects addressed in the book but I'll give a few examples to provide a 'taste' of the material.

Crime Scene: Modern cameras/photography techniques can record a crime scene in 3-D. Thus experts can determine where a shooter was standing, the trajectory of the bullet(s), how the victim fell, how the blood sprayed, and so on. And the photos can help a jury visualize the crime.

Arson: Additives in accelerants can be used to learn where the fuel was obtained and microbes (diatoms) in the the match heads can be used to trace the matches. One anecdote in this section was distressing: A fire in Ireland's 'Stardust' nightclub in 1981 caused many deaths and injuries because the club owner had locked or blocked most of the fire exits. Arson experts found that the owner didn't start the fire (it was apparently electrical) but he clearly caused the mass carnage. Still, the owner wasn't held legally responsible and even got a big insurance settlement. (I hope Ireland has changed some laws since then.)

Insects: Different kinds of insects attack a dead body in a specific order - so the bug population on a corpse can help determine the time of death. Moreover, the insects consuming the corpse can be ground up and analysed for poisons that were in the body. That's a 'twofer' :)

Pathology: Medical examiners study the body to determine cause of death. Stab wounds can help identify the murder weapon; contaminated body parts can reveal poisons; bullets can point to the gun used; etc. If the knife is sticking out of the victim, of course, that's a huge clue.

Blood spatter: One expert McDermid interviewed noted that she needed to study the entire crime scene in detail to make sense of the blood splatter evidence. She didn't like detectives telling her 'just look at that section of wall beside the victim'... because tiny drops of blood can spray far and wide.

Poisons: Arsenic and other poisons were apparently the murder weapon of choice for royalty (as well as the common folk) for centuries - since there was no way to prove that corpses contained toxins. Once scientists learned how to test for toxins, however, poisoners were regularly caught. Nevertheless it's daunting to think how many people got away with murder over the course of history.

DNA: This is the 'gold standard' of forensic analysis. If someone's DNA is on/in the victim or at the crime scene that person was almost certainly there. This isn't always 100% accurate though, because of human error. McDermid relates an anecdote about a lab tech who used an improperly cleaned tray (someone's saliva was already on it) to analyze DNA...so the spitter was initally accused. Another possible problem here is deliberate contamination of the crime scene by the perp. (Some murder mysteries I've read use this plot device. The perp brings a condom with someone else's sperm and sprinkles it on the victim.)

I was reassured though, when one forensic expert noted that it would be almost impossible for a perp to purposely plant evidence/set up a crime scene to implicate someone else. The analyst noted that the perp would tend to overdo it or do it wrong. For example: leave too much blood; leave the wrong pattern of blood; plant too many glass shards; put evidence in the wrong places; and so on.

At the end of the book I was dismayed to read that attorneys (usually on the defense side) routinely try to intimidate/manipulate expert witnesses to spin things in a certain direction rather than to discover the truth. In some ways vigorous cross-examination is good: One section of the book tells the story of an 'expert witness' physician who insisted that - if several children in a family succumbed to crib death - the parents were definitely murderers. In one afflicted family, crib death turned out to be a genetic predispostion...but the mom, wrongly imprisoned then exonerated, committed suicide. And the 'expert doctor' had his license revoked. Still, I would wish the facts could be brought out without 'politics'.

This is a fascinating book, highly recommended - especially to readers interested in true crime.

I wrote this book to restore the poetic dimension to the discussion of urban form. Much has been recovered about the formal aspects of cities, but what they used to mean is often forgotten. It's my argument that you can't understand the form without the meaning.

About the Author
Named as one of the top forty architects of his generation in the United States, David Mayernik is an internationally recognized practicing architect, painter, and educator. In addition to having been Visiting Professor at the University of Notre Dame's School of Architecture, he has taught with the New York Academy of Art, the Institute for the Study of Classical Architecture, and the University of Virginia's Erasmus-Jefferson Scholars program in Tuscany. He is a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome.

Wonderful Journey Across Time and Ideas

Timeless Cities is indeed a wonderful journey, a voyage across time and ideas. The author tells a poetic, scholarly and delightful story of five Italian cities and how they became meaningful and memorable places, remaining so to this day.
For those who have experienced the magical, transforming impact Rome, Florence, Venice, Siena and Pienza have on their visitors, David Mayernik unlocks the richly poetic ideas which are their very essence. An architect and traveler, his writing is filled with the passion of one who truly loves and understands the tradition of those great cities: the tradition of humanism.
For all for whom life is, above all, a cherished series of discoveries and experiences, Mayernik extends a masterful invitation to explore those places which stir our souls and which demonstrate the highest fulfillment of our collective potential for cultural and artistic achievement. He then challenges us to again seek to create cities "through which dance the Muses", cities which are "built Ideas suffused with cultural Memory". Accept his gracious invitation. It is a journey you will treasure.

A memorable lesson

Mr. Mayernik transports the reader to the glorious past of Rome, Venice, Florence, Siena, and Pienza; a past in which city builders sought to make their cities into reflections of the perfect heavenly City of God; a past in which every stone, every building, every piazza was an episode of the larger urban narrative that played itself for its citizens as a great "theatre of the mind."
Mr. Mayernik's writing allows us to view the urban mythologies of these places not as History, events frozen in by gone times and no longer capable of speaking to present generations, but as living lessons in city building; he invites his audience to learn the 'language' of these five cities so that we too can build memorable places.

The idealistic author argues that cities require a predetermined purpose, a self-image that will be transcribed in its development through time. Conversely, a city's architecture and layout embody its memory and reveal its true nature. To illustrate this, the author discusses at some length the pre-18th century development of Rome, Venice, Florence, Sienna and Pienza.

Needless to say, the approach is highly intellectual. The author for instance draws various conclusions from the �architectural pun� created in ancient Rome by the construction, back to back, of a temple to Venus, goddess of love (AMOR in Latin) and a temple to the city per se (ROMA in Latin). In Venice, he likens all of piazza San Marco to an open-air church _ the Basilica acting as the sanctuary _ whereas the shape of Sienna's Campo is described as an analogy to the Virgin's protective cloak.

This requires of course on the reader's part a good prior knowledge of the cities discussed and the book would in fact definitely benefit by being more systematic and extensive.

Unfortunately, illustrations are in black and white and not up to par with what is now expected for such a topic. Even the image on the cover page is strangely unappealing!

Despite these shortcomings, many planners and city-lovers in general will find this book worthwhile.
