Good introductory book

The book has good introductory level information on tongue diagnosis. Two things that I think were not so great: 1) there is tons of generic information and background on ayurveda that you can find in any book on ayurveda - I was a little disappointed to find that more than half of the book is about generic information on ayurveda, nothing to do with tongue diagnosis, 2) the illustrative pictures of tongue in the book are in black and white - pretty much useless especially when it asks you to see red spots etc on the tongue with a black and white illustrative example.

Every anthropologists knows who Mellvile J. Herskovits is- -right? When one lists Franz Boas' most influential students, he is the one sandwiched somewhere between Kroeber, Lowie, Benedict and Mead. Herskovits founded the anthropology department at Northwestern, helped to organize the African Studies Association (ASA), and conducted ethnographic research in Suriname to document African survivals in the New World. Oh, yeah, didn't he have a wife that helped him conduct fieldwork among the Maroons? For the majority of anthropologists, this is the biographic outline that comes to mind. Historian Jerry Gershenhorn's brilliant new book simply explodes this flat and uninformed sketch by offering a detailed and textured portrait of a complex and energetic scholar who almost single handedly developed an uniquely American anthropology of Africans, on both sides of the Atlantic.

Over the course of his career, he emerged as a particularly powerful figure in both anthropology and area studies, and while he was always shrewd, he never hesitated to publicly challenge or undermine such powerful figures as Gunnar Myrdal, E. Franklin Frazier, W. E. B. Du Bois, Carter G. Woodson, and Dwight D. Eisenhower. Gershenhorn frames his powerful and lucid intellectual biography by identifying specific tensions and particular contradictions that arise from

Herskovits's "embrace of cultural relativism, his attack on racial an cultural hierarchy, and his conceptualization of Negro studies" (p. 9).

Meticulously researched, Gershenhorn develops a captivating narrative divided up into seven long but well executed chapters that document the major twists and turns within Herskovits's career. Focusing on the racial politics of knowledge, Gershenhorn provides more than a description of Herskovits's past, he gives the reader the tools, for example, to reconcile Johnnetta B. Cole's belief that "Herskovits had a special place in his heart for African American students," and St. Clair Drake's statement that he "never attempted to recruit and train Afro-Americans" (p.198). Above all, Gershenhorn provides answers and much needed context to better understand why the legacy of Herskovits remains so ambivalent within African American studies, ambiguous within anthropology, yet so well defined in African Studies.

From the beginning of his career to the end, Herskovits's research agenda was set and shaped by the funding he could secure. Gershenhorn is at his best when he describes the tug of war between the research Herksovits wanted to pursue and the research he was forced to produce for the National Research Council, the Social Science Research Council, and the Rockefeller and Carnegie foundations- -the major sources of his funds. For example, in 1923, Herskovits' first major research project was an assessment of "physical and psychological variability within a racially mixed population" of Negroes in Harlem. It was funded by the NRC, despite the fact he "never even took an anthropometry class at Columbia" (p. 29).

Gershenhorn's most valuable contribution to the study of the history of anthropology involves his careful and creative description of the complicated debate over black culture, and the role of so-called "African survivals." After Melville and Frances completed two trips to Surinam, he wrote a "major interpretive essay in which he argued that African cultural influence extended throughout the Americas" (p.77). This was the first in a series of books and articles that pitted the well-meaning cultural relativist against established sociologists like E. Franklin Frazier who "throughout his career . . . rejected the influence of African culture on American blacks" (p.101).

It also pitted him against funding agencies that consistently supported research which focused on U.S. race relations, not black people's culture. By following Herskovits's career, and the money that churned in its wake, one comes away with a stunning realization that both the foundations as well as AAA leadership made it clear that there was little interest in developing Negro anthropology in the Americas, while there was a compelling interest to develop anthropological research in Africa, especially in the context of the Cold War and the rise of area studies.

Debu joins the next caravan to Tibet to look for his father, little knowing he is setting out on the most perilous, yet exciting journey of his life.� The adventures follow thick and fast--a forced stay in a monastery with a boy lama who takes a fancy to him, his capture by a band of bandits led by the cruel, enigmatic chief Nangbo who is gifted with magical powers, a stay in the goldfields of Thok Jalong, and finally it all climaxes with a heartpounding, breathtaking horse race.
An action-packed adventure story, Caravan to Tibet teems with memorable characters and fine descriptions of life in the Himalayan kingdoms of Kumaon and Tibet at the turn of the nineteenth century.

Caravan to Tibet is deeply rooted in my own family history and Debu's journey into Tibet is one that my ancestors actually undertook every year.
�� I grew up in Almora, a small town in Uttaranchal, but knew that my grandfather came from a place much further north, where life was quite different from our rather staid middle-class existence. Male cousins who undertook the trek to Milam to learn more about their origins returned with enthralling tales. (Girls were considered too delicate to make the trip!) They told us about the nomadic lifestyle, the annual trade expeditions, the explorers Pandit Nain Singh and Kishan Singh Rawat, and other members of our extended family who had mapped Tibet disguised as lamas in the nineteenth century. Some of my aunts, occasionally my father, would add to that material. Though our connections with that past had become limited, the colourful rugs or chutkas that Debu� tries to sell were part of our household furnishings along with the silver-lined wooden bowls Sonam Darka uses in the book. And uncles or cousins from the village would visit as well, occasionally making the journey on horseback.
��� All these accounts were so fascinating, that when I took up writing as a profession, I just had to put them into a story. After further research, Caravan to Tibet was penned and appeared first as a long short story in the annual number of the well-known children's magazine Target in 1989. Much later, in 2001, it was serialized with a few slight changes in Cricket, the popular American children's magazine. Some time after that, I decided to expand it into an adventure novel, and am very happy that it has found a home with Puffin Books.
Certain political events led to the end of the trade expeditions in the 1950s, and the Shauka traders have adopted other professions. However, I do hope I have succeeded in providing a glimpse of those exciting times and that my readers enjoy this adventure tale.

About the Author
Author, poet and translator, Deepa Agarwal writes for both children and adults and has about 50 books published. Among several other awards national and international, she has received the N.C.E.R.T. National Award for Children's Literature for her picture book Ashok's New Friends, while her historical fiction Caravan to Tibet featured in the IBBY (International Board on Books for Young People) Honour List 2008. Five of her books have been listed in the White Raven Catalogue of the International Youth Library, Munich. She is a regular contributor to children's magazines in India and abroad and her stories have appeared in many anthologies and school text books. Her work has been translated into several Indian and foreign languages as well. Recent titles include Write Right (Scholastic India) and Rajula and the Web of Danger (Hachette India). Deepa is active in reading promotion, being the founder-organiser of the Habitat Children's Book Forum in New Delhi.

Reading Deepa Agarwal's account of an Indian caravan trip to Tibet as seen through the eyes of a 14 year old boy is a learning experience as well as excellent entertainment.
