Gone in a Heartbeat: A Physician's Search for True Healing, by Dr. Neil Spector

Dr. Neil Spector, one of the nation’s top oncologists, led a charmed life. He was educated at prestigious universities, trained at top medical centers, and had married the woman of his dreams. It seemed too perfect. And it was. In 1994, it all came crashing down. He and his wife lost two unborn children. And a mysterious illness brought him to the brink of death. In his compelling memoir, Gone in a Heartbeat, Dr. Spector describes in great detail how he was misdiagnosed and, despite being a medical insider, was often discounted by his fellow physicians. As he recounts his own unorthodox approach to medicine and physician/patient relationships, Dr. Spector encourages readers to never surrender their power to a third party. He tells of courageous patients who served as role models, he concedes that doctors do a disservice to patients when “we treat them like statistics,” and he advocates for educated patients who can make informed decisions collaboratively and not simply follow instructions. In Dr. Spector’s words: “To recognize that we are in control of our own bodies and destinies can be a powerful step toward true healing.” Readers of Gone in a Heartbeat will never view the medical profession the same again.

Should be required reading for all health professionals
By Ginny D. Dudek
This book is incredible! I’ve been a nurse for 45 years, and this story of hope and healing should be required reading for all health professionals.

As a person with Lyme and coinfections, I love how Dr. Spector addresses the complex CDC testing issue: don't ignore the patient, their symptoms and use common sense. Even the CDC says that Lyme is a clinical diagnosis, so patients should not have to move mountains to find a doctor to appropriately treat late diagnosis Lyme disease. Health care providers are being forced to spend less and less time with patients, and relying more and more on test results, which can’t give them a clear clinical picture of what is going on.

I loved his poems, interspersed throughout the book, that describe the miracles and love that were occurring all around him. The search for meaning, when faced with chronic illness opens doors to our spiritual nature. Someone described aspects of this book as “quirky”. That comment reminds me of the quote by Nietzsche “And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music”. Dr. Spector heard the music of his soul and communicates it in a very powerful and uplifting way.

I’m going to buy several more copies, one for a friend that starts medical school in September. Another will be for the medical center director where I took my husband to the ER, when my son was inpatient recovering from surgery. The ER physician would not wait three minutes for me to return from my son’s room to let me be present when he tactlessly told my husband he had cancer. A third copy will go to my ‘fired’ medical group practice that diagnosed me with lymphoma, based on a CT scan, and overlooked the fever of 103 that I ran for 7 days while on antibiotics, never considering an infectious source for my illness. I count my blessings that I had a MVA when I had heart block from Lyme carditis, and needed bone surgery, requiring IV antibiotics, reversing my heart block early in the course of my infection. Thankfully, we’ve found very skilled and caring physicians, and received excellent care for cancer and Lyme.

Dr. Spector’s memoir stresses: never give up hope, follow your intuition and be here now. Learning through his experience is a lot easier than learning it through a broken heart.

One person at a time, one heart beat at a time...one page at a time.
By MentorEngine
Wow, what a read! I rate this the full five stars for many reasons. First, because of my attention deficit, I am not one to read a book start-to-finish in one sitting. Not only did I read Gone in a Heartbeat: A Physician's Search for Healing all in one sitting, but I started it before bed and suddenly found it was 6 a.m. and I hadn't noticed the time go by. Book was read.

More than a memoir, Dr. Spector’s book includes chapter breaks with beautiful poems—poems that would make excellent reading in and of themselves if compiled separately—also written by Dr. Spector during his pre-transplant journey. Vivid details of his symptoms, medical experiences, close encounters with his own death, and memories of holding the hands of patients as they leave this life all facilitate a vital awareness of . . .

1. The myriad complex and even life-threatening symptoms and physical ailments caretakers can be experiencing while caring for their patients, yet completely unknown to the patients and their families.
2. The ever present need to be our own health advocates and go with our inner sense of what may or may not be happening with our individual bodies.
3. The health system’s emphasis on process rather than on people—so that mindful attention must be focused on each patient’s unique symptoms and physical reactions to disease and illness.
4. The critical importance of giving thoughtful analysis to our treatment plans while not necessarily subscribing to any single practitioner’s gospel of how to proceed with our health care.
5. Treasuring the moment we have now and opening our hearts to those we love and who love us.

The book gives us intellectual, emotional, and spiritual lessons about medicine, life, parenthood, and love. It explores the tension between existing both as a fragile human being and as what seems at times like a super-humanly strong being. Some of us even seem to share a divinely inspired strength, beautifully rolling out before us, as it does in this true story.

Dr. Spector has lived nearly 60 years with not one but two precious hearts (the second of which his daughter actually named “heavenly precious”). Neil Spector, MD, generously shares that heart of gold with all of us, as he includes us in his story by allowing us to read it.

It is clear by the end of the first chapter that this story is ultimately not solely about Dr. Spector. We do learn intimate details of his years of struggle and misery with undiagnosed Lyme’s Disease, followed by his fight to survive long enough to receive another heart. However, his real subject is each of us who share triumph and defeat on a daily basis.

He writes of all those whose hearts deserve to be called "precious," both because of what they do for us, and for what they have done and can do for the world at large. It happens just one person at a time, one heart beat at a time, just as it has for Dr. Spector in every life he has ever touched. It also happens for those of us lucky enough to read his marvelously thoughtful and thought-provoking book—one page at a time.

Fabulous book depicting the harsh realities of Lyme disease and the toll it takes on it's victims.
By Cindy Casey
As a former heart transplant nurse and a Chronic Lyme patient myself I loved this book. I think the world has to wake up to very real epidemic that is upon us with Lyme disease currently going undiagnosed and misunderstood by mainstream medicine. I wonder now how many of my "idiopathic" dilated cardiomyopathy patients actually had Lyme disease. There are no accurate tests to diagnose this disease so unfortunately far too many lives have been lost. Bravo to Dr. Neil Spector for writing this incredible book! The CDC has to wake up to this problem!
