Ecological Urbanism: The Nature of the City asks the questions that are important inside and outside the built environment professions: what are climate change, urbanisation and ecology doing to the theory and practice of urban design? How does Ecological Urbanism figure in this change? What is Ecological Urbanism?
In answer, this book is neither definitive – impossible when a subject is still in motion – nor encyclopaedic – equally impossible when so much has been written on almost every aspect of these essays. Instead, it seeks to rebalance the ecological narrative and its embryonic modes of practice with the narratives of urbanism and its older, deeply embedded modes of practice. It examines the implications for cities and the designers of cities now we are required to again address their metabolic as well as social and formal dimensions, and it explores the extent to which environmental engineering and natural systems design can and should become drivers for the remaking of cities in the 21st century. Above all, it argues that sooner rather than later, urbanism needs to become environmentally literate, and environmental design needs to become culturally literate.

An incredibly important book.
By Charles G.
This is an incredibly important and groundbreaking book. In a mere 154 pages the author does an exceptional job of covering extensive ground with thought-provoking and insightful critiques throughout. She distinguishes the fields of "urban ecology", "ecological urbanism", "cultural ecology", "ecological anthropology", "political ecology" and "landscape urbanism" (their individual perspective and their synthesis), provides succinct yet clear chapters describing the three models of ecological urbanism (the garden city, the boundary, and the continuum) and their history (including critiques of each), and delves into the historical taxonomy and narratives of the ideal city and the eco city (with specific case studies that include 21st century projects from around the world). Then the author discusses the necessary balance and integration of top-down and bottom-up participation in regards to planning and governance, and the vital role that architects and urban planners need to assume in mediating between the few and the many, to be actively engaged in the socially-invested "re-formation of the city as artificial ecosystem", and to "negotiate a synthesis of 'the city of culture' and 'the nature of the city' by speaking both languages fluently."
An impassioned call to transcend and heal the great divide between the narratives of culture and nature, make the necessary transition to resilience planning and co-create metabolic and productive landscapes...this is a must read for all urbanists.
