Heval, by Mr. Jorgen Nicolai

Jorgen took the decision to join the Kurds in their fight against Islamic State after his friend was abducted and killed by IS. He fights at the “tip of the spear” on the western front and in the spring offensive against the jihadi warriors, and chronicles the war against a fanatic foe in nerve wracking detail. Proceeds are donated to Kurdish red cross (Heyva Sor) via the memorial fund of our "brother" Erik Kostas Scurfield, who was K.I.A. This Diary is the only one of its kind describing the war against Islamic State directly from the frontline.

A riveting diary from the war against Islamic State
By maria
Jrgen Nicolai’s personal account in the frontline in the war against Islamic State in Syria makes for a riveting read. It is packed with action and tension as he recounts in detail how he fought the Daesh, as Islamic State is known. Particularly gripping is the build up towards his team’s first attack on the western front.

His commitment to the war against a barbaric and fanatic foe begins with a phone call from Syria. He learns the dreadful news that his close Syrian friend has been dragged away, and presumably shot in cold blood by IS militants. After he visits his dear friend’s wife and children in a refugee camp, his commitment is complete. Having tried and failed to join the Kurdish Peshmerga, he joins the Kurdish militia fighting in Syria.

As an engineer he had initially thought of bringing his technical skills to bear in this deadly war. But as a trained soldier with experience in NATO exercises, he thirsts for direct action against the Daesh. His is a story of a Danish civilian putting himself in the line of fire to become an experienced and battle-hardened soldier. In it, he becomes a soldier’s solider, extremely well-versed in the craft of warfare and combat – as much to defeat the enemy as to ensure his own survival.

But this book is much more that an action-packed thriller. It is a story of a comrade in arms who pays homage to the Kurd and foreign fighters, many of whom became his friends. These were men and women – hevals, as they are known – who were prepared to lay their lives so that ordinary people can live in freedom and peace. It is also a requiem for the dead, for those who fell in battle. As he wryly observes, battles may be won, but always at a huge cost, when young lives are so tragically sacrificed.

Occasionally, the rapid flow of action enters pools of contemplation. As a follower of Buddhist teachings, the warrior is also a wise guide and gentle soul. When his friend is killed in battle, he ponders death. When he gazes upon the starlit Arabian sky at night, he is filled with wonder. And, in the heat of battle, he gives dignity to death, by closing the eyes of his dead comrade.

By the end of the book, we are left with an abiding impression of a beautiful country, especially its mountains and the River Tigris, desecrated by a malevolent force whose atrocities know no bounds. But one senses that one day they will be defeated, and the people will return to their abandoned villages in peace. Jrgen Nicolai’s book shows how, in a small way, he would have helped bring them that peace.

A brilliant book
By Werner
I was eating this book. Why would a private person voluntarily fight against IS? What will he experience? Any second thoughts? An easy read, but with depth.

A unique and personal account.
By Johno
“Heval” by Jorgen Nicolai is a unique and personal account of one mans journey to Iraq and Syria to fight in the name of humanity against ISIL (the Daesh). Based on his personal diary, Jorgen an ex-Danish Soldier, seasoned traveller and Engineer, travels to a UNHCR refugee camp near Erbil to visit the wife of a Syrian friend who has likely been killed by ISIL in Aleppo and feels personally compelled to do something to help. The stories of atrocities committed by ISIL, the murders, rape and enslavement and other horrors broadcast on news networks and through the internet moves Jorgen to join the Kurds in their fight against ISIL at a time when the world seems to be looking the other way. Ignoring the potential legal complication of being a Danish citizen in a foreign army and turning his family life upside down, Jorgen decides to leave his wife and daughter and commit to several months as a volunteer. First he tries to join the Peshmerga in the Kurdish autonomous region of Iraq but unfortunately the Kurds have bowed to pressure from Western Governments and turn him away. Not to be deterred Jorgen makes contact with the Syrian Kurd militia and following many other westerners joins the YPG, the people’s protection units of the West Kurdistan, or Rojava in North-West Syria. It should be noted that Jorgen never names the YPG as the group he has joined and refers to his comrades and other Kurd fighters only as “Hevals”.

After a period of waiting in a safe house in Sulaymaniyah with other volunteers, the group are transported to a guerrilla encampment in the mountains and await a chance to sneak across the border into Syria. Once in Rojava, Jorgen and his fellow volunteers, all being former soldiers in their respective national armies, excel in induction training and are quickly approved to be transferred to a frontline unit. Once on the front, the war of attrition becomes apparent as neither side is moving, Jorgen and the other westerners are able to make use of their experience and the bravery of the Kurds to take the fight to Daesh inflicting casualties. Wanting to be in the fight, Jorgen requests transfer to Shingal and Tel Hamis where the conflict is far more fluid, unpredictable and dangerous and is involved in several major battles to retake villages and towns from Daesh.

“Heval” is obviously written by a soldier but it is not a monologue of technical jargon on weapons and tactics or a sterile over view of combat citing a list of gun fights and kills taken, Heval does discuss weapons and tactics but in a way that anyone can understand. Jorgen is obviously a well trained soldier and its obvious in his account, he does not brag but he also keeps it honest. Importantly, the story does have a lot of heart, there are sad and touching moments and there is humor and a fair bit of introspection and soul searching by the author. Jorgen’s admiration and respect for the Kurds, particularly the female fighters of the YPJ is obvious and undeniable, while he does not go into much detail about the geo-politics of the conflict and the aspirations of the Rojava Kurds it is obvious that he is sympathetic to their goal of creating a secular democracy and seeking independence.

“Heval” It is fast paced and easily finished in a couple of sittings. The book is no “Homage to Catalonia” by George Orwell or “My war gone by, I miss it so” by Anthony Loyd and could have more depth, but it is an excellent and unique story nonetheless which will inform the reader on an ongoing war and the few westerners who are currently there fighting, bleeding and dying while our Governments still dither and vacillate on what to do about the most insidious death cult to emerge in modern history.
